My 22nd dance was a lively and playful performance to the iconic 80s hit “Tarzan Boy” by Baltimora. This time, I embraced the jungle theme with an adventurous story and a costume that brought the wild spirit to life. The dance was more than just a choreography; it was an immersive tale, blending drama, humor, and creativity into an unforgettable experience.
The Storyline
The dance revolved around a captivating narrative. I played a tribal woman, adorned in a lion-inspired costume that I bought. The centerpiece of the performance was a cage I constructed, complete with elastic bars that made it both functional and theatrical. Locked inside, I awaited my fate.
Enter Tarzan, played by my instructor, who emerged with his signature strength and curiosity. Initially mistaking me for a real lion, he soon realized I was a woman cloaked in animal skin. This discovery set the stage for a dynamic duet as we danced through the unfolding story. The chemistry between Tarzan and the tribal woman was playful, each move telling a part of the tale.
But the twist came at the end. Using wit and agility, my character managed to lure Tarzan into the cage. The elastic bars allowed for seamless entry and exit, adding an element of surprise. As the door snapped shut, the ranger—another instructor—made his grand entrance to claim his prize: the captured Tarzan. Mission accomplished!
The Creative Process
Bringing this story to life required meticulous planning and a lot of creative effort. The cage was a centerpiece, and I took great care in designing it to be lightweight, durable, and visually striking. The elastic bars were a brilliant addition, ensuring the dance flowed smoothly while adding a touch of theatrical magic.
The costumes played a huge role in setting the mood. My lion-inspired outfit featured earthy tones and subtle embellishments to mimic the wild aesthetic. Tarzan’s costume was classic yet rugged, perfectly embodying the jungle hero. The ranger’s outfit completed the trio, contrasting the wildness with structured authority.
The Performances
We recorded the dance first, capturing every moment with precision and flair. The studio setup allowed us to experiment with angles, making the jungle atmosphere come alive on screen.
For the live performance, the energy was electric. The audience was fully engaged, cheering as Tarzan and the tribal woman moved through their playful yet intricate choreography. The grand reveal of the ranger and the unexpected twist of Tarzan being captured elicited laughter and applause.
Why This Dance Stands Out
“Tarzan Boy” is a song full of energy and spirit, and it lent itself perfectly to a storyline filled with adventure and humor. The combination of a fun narrative, engaging choreography, and creative props made this dance one of my enjoyable and memorable performances.
This project reminded me why I love dancing so much. It’s not just about the steps; it’s about storytelling, creativity, and connecting with the audience. Whether on screen or live, this performance was a wild ride from start to finish.
