Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone to "Hey Sexy Lady"
When I first decided to perform my ninth dance to "Hey Sexy Lady", I’ll admit – I was a little nervous. This was a theme I hadn’t explored before, and the idea of stepping into a more confident, bold role felt daunting. But deep down, I knew that to make my dance portfolio truly diverse and captivating, I needed to challenge myself with a variety of styles and themes.
The Preparation and Recording The recording process was unique this time around. With Covid still lingering in the background, in-person performances were not an option, so I rented out a school library for an hour to shoot the video. There was something fun yet surreal about dancing among bookshelves, transforming a quiet space into a stage filled with energy and rhythm.
One of the best parts was having my niece join me at the beginning of the intro skit. Her presence lightened the mood, and as always, she brought her infectious enthusiasm. Sharing moments like these with her makes each dance even more memorable.
I was lucky to have Bill Huddleston Photography on site to capture the essence of the dance. His ability to freeze-frame the right moments and bring out the best angles in each shot added a level of professionalism that I’m incredibly grateful for. His photos always tell a story that words sometimes can’t.
Nervous but Determined Even though I had rehearsed the routine multiple times, I could feel my nerves creeping in during the recording. It wasn’t just about getting the moves right – I wanted to bring personality and authenticity to the dance. There were moments when I felt like I was overthinking, trying to make sure every piece came together seamlessly. But in the end, it wasn’t about perfection – it was about the experience.
The Big Reveal After the video was completed, my dance studio showcased it to our group of dancers. I remember sitting there, feeling a bit anxious as I watched it play. To my relief and joy, everyone loved it. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and those nerves I had while dancing seemed to fade away in that moment. Sometimes we’re our own toughest critics, but it’s encouraging to know that stepping outside of our comfort zones can lead to something truly rewarding.
Reflecting on the Journey Looking back, this dance wasn’t just about trying a new theme – it was about growth. It taught me to embrace the unknown and trust in the creative process. Each dance I complete adds another layer to my journey, and while some may make me nervous, they all shape me into a better performer.
I’m excited to continue this journey and see what dance number ten will bring. Maybe it’ll be another bold step, or maybe it’ll be something softer and more graceful. Either way, I know I’ll take it on with the same passion and determination that got me through this one.
Until then, I’ll keep dancing – and maybe, just maybe, I’ll revisit 'Hey Sexy Lady' with even more confidence next time.
